0402 and smaller parts are usually unmarked. A bare "0" or "000" is a zero-ohm jumper.

Three Kinds of Code

  • 3-digit (±5% parts): two figures then the number of zeros. 472 = 47 × 10² = 4.7 kΩ. 100 = 10 Ω, not 100 Ω.
  • 4-digit (±1% parts): three figures then the number of zeros. 1002 = 100 × 10² = 10 kΩ.
  • EIA-96 (±1% parts, tiny packages): a two-digit index into the 96 standard values, then a letter multiplier. 01C = 100 × 100 = 10 kΩ.

Questions

What does 472 mean on a resistor?
4.7 kΩ. The first two digits are the value and the last is the number of zeros to add, so 47 followed by two zeros is 4,700 Ω.
What does 01C mean?
It’s an EIA-96 code for a ±1% resistor. Code 01 is the value 100 and C multiplies by 100, so 01C is 10 kΩ.
What does R mean in a code like 4R7?
R marks the decimal point. 4R7 is 4.7 Ω and R47 is 0.47 Ω.
