M10, M12 and M14 head sizes changed when ISO 4017 replaced DIN 933. Older and imported hardware often uses the DIN size, so check both when a wrench doesn't fit. A dash means no standard size.

Bolt Size vs Wrench Size

A bolt is named by its thread diameter, not its head. A 3/8″ bolt has a 3/8″ thread and a 9/16″ head, so it takes a 9/16″ wrench. Metric works the same way: an M8 bolt has an 8 mm thread and a 13 mm head.

Hex keys go by the size of the socket in the head, which depends on the head style: socket head cap screws take a bigger key than button and flat head screws of the same thread.

Questions

What size socket fits a 3/8″ bolt?
A 9/16″ wrench or socket fits a standard 3/8″ hex bolt and its nut. A 3/8″ socket head cap screw takes a 5/16″ hex key.
Why doesn't my 17 mm wrench fit an M10 bolt?
It may be an ISO 4017 bolt, which has a 16 mm head. The older DIN 933 standard used 17 mm for M10, so both are common. The same split happens at M12 (18 or 19 mm) and M14 (21 or 22 mm).
Can I use a metric socket on an SAE bolt?
Sometimes. The answer card says when a socket from the other system fits within a couple of tenths of a millimetre. If it’s looser than that, it can round the bolt head.
